General surgery focuses on abdominal organs including esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts. General surgeons deal with diseases involving the soft tissues like skin and breast, trauma, peripheral artery disease and hernias and perform endoscopic procedures like as gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
Infections, bleeding, bowel obstructions, organ perforations and rupture of the appendix are common emergencies dealt with. Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder and is routinely done by general surgeons.
Laparoscopic surgery is a minimal access technique using cameras and small instruments inserted through 3 to 15mm incisions. Hernias can also be repaired laparoscopically. Bariatric surgery can be performed laparoscopically and reduces wound complications in obese patients.
